Attorney J. Derreck Whitson is licensed to practice in Tennessee and received his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Memphis, Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law in 2005. Derreck attended East Tennessee State University in Johnson City where he earned a bachelor’s degree in social science. He graduated from ETSU with double majors in philosophy and political science in 2002.

Mr. Whitson is admitted to practice in both the state and federal courts by the Tennessee Supreme Court and the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee. He attends continuing legal education seminars to keep current on Tennessee personal injury, criminal defense, divorce law and estate law issues. He also attends national and state bar association conventions to keep informed about current initiatives that involve the practice of law.

Derreck is the President of the Newport Bar Association, as well as a member of the Tennessee and Jefferson County Bar Associations. He also serves as the district coordinator for the Tennessee Bar Association state high school mock trial competition since 1997.

Derreck is active in the community and on the board of directors for the Newport/Cocke County Boys and Girls Club. He was a founder and member of the Board of Directors for the Dandridge Community Trust, Corp. in 2006 and for the Downtown Newport Association in 2007.

While in law school, Mr. Whitson received the Dean’s Award for Distinguished Service from the University of Memphis in 2005. He also received the Dean’s Award for Pro Bono Service and Citation by Phi Alpha Delta.

He was a student attorney at the University of Memphis Legal Clinic. Derreck learned how to practice law with guidance from experienced attorneys and law professors while a student attorney that he now carries these skills into his law practice today.

Before admission to the Tennessee bar, Derreck was a law clerk at the law firm of Rosenblum & Reisman, PLLC in Memphis, Tennessee. The personal injury lawyers at the firm concentrated in personal injury law as plaintiffs’ attorneys and handled auto accidents, car wrecks, truck and motorcycle wrecks, medical malpractice, wrongful death, workers compensation, and products and premises liability cases.

Derreck always wanted to return to his home in East Tennessee to practice law and was given that opportunity when he was offered an associate position in the law office of Rebecca D. Slone, in Dandridge, Jefferson County, Tennessee. He grew up in Dandridge, Jefferson County, Tennessee. Mr. Whitson has concentrated his general law practice in personal injury lawyer, divorce and family law including contested and agreed divorces, child custody, child support, visitation, grandparent rights and visitation, adoption, alimony and spousal support issues since 2005.
